Lake Victoria is, by surface area, the largest tropical lake on Earth and the second-largest freshwater lake by surface area anywhere in the world. It is also the site of one of the most dramatic ecological transformations in the history of freshwater biology: a lake that once harboured an extraordinary diversity of fish species — in particular, hundreds of endemic cichlid species found nowhere else on Earth — was fundamentally and irreversibly changed by the introduction of a single predator. Understanding Lake Victoria's fish fauna today means understanding that transformation and what it left behind.
The lake basin as a whole contains approximately 183 fish species. This number encompasses rivers, swamps, and satellite lakes across the basin, not just the main lake itself. It is still a diverse freshwater ecosystem by global standards — but it is dramatically less diverse than it was 60 years ago, and the mechanisms that drove that loss continue to operate.
The Six Major Commercial Species
Six fish species dominate commercial fishing and local consumption across the Uganda portion of Lake Victoria: Nile perch, Nile tilapia, dagaa (mukene), the surviving haplochromines, catfish, and lungfish. Each occupies a different ecological niche and plays a different economic role.

Nile Perch: The Dominant Commercial Species
The Nile perch (Lates niloticus) is one of the world's largest freshwater fish — adults commonly reach 100 kg, and specimens over 200 kg have been recorded. In Lake Victoria it was not a natural part of the ecosystem. Introductions began in the 1950s and 1960s as part of a policy to boost the lake's commercial fish yield, and for two decades the population appeared to remain relatively limited. Then, in the late 1970s and through the 1980s, Nile perch numbers exploded, fuelled by eutrophication that reduced oxygen in deep water and pushed prey species into shallower areas where perch could hunt more effectively.
The commercial consequences were profound. Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania developed large-scale processing industries — chilled and frozen Nile perch fillets became a significant export commodity, with European markets emerging as the primary buyers. Israel, Spain, and Italy feature among the leading importers of Lake Victoria Nile perch. The industry created tens of thousands of jobs across the fishing, processing, and logistics chain and became one of Uganda's most significant sources of foreign exchange from fish exports.
The ecological consequences were equally profound and overwhelmingly negative. Nile perch predation on haplochromine cichlids — the species flock that had dominated the lake's ecology for hundreds of thousands of years — drove an extinction event that affected at minimum dozens and possibly hundreds of species. Many were eliminated before they were even described by science.
Nile Tilapia: The People's Fish
While Nile perch generates the economic headlines, Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) — known in Uganda as ngege — is the fish that most directly sustains the nutritional needs of communities around the lake. Tilapia is widely eaten across Uganda, affordable for lower-income households, and available both fresh from landing sites and in dried form in markets far from the lake.
Nile tilapia is a herbivorous filter feeder, consuming algae and phytoplankton in the water column. This diet makes it relatively resilient to changes in the lake's prey fish community — it is not dependent on the haplochromines whose collapse reshaped the lake's ecology. It is, however, sensitive to water quality: eutrophication-driven algal blooms affect tilapia reproduction and juvenile survival in nearshore nursery habitats.
Tilapia aquaculture has expanded significantly in Uganda as wild-caught tilapia stocks have come under increasing fishing pressure. Pond-based and cage aquaculture operations on Lake Victoria supplement wild harvests and have become an important component of Uganda's fish production statistics.
Mukene: Small Fish, Large Importance
Mukene (Rastrineobola argentea), the small pelagic fish known as dagaa in Tanzania and omena in Kenya, is one of the most ecologically and nutritionally significant species in the Lake Victoria system. It is a small, silvery fish of 5–8 cm, found in massive aggregations in open water and forming a critical link in the lake's food chain: it feeds on zooplankton and phytoplankton, and is itself consumed by Nile perch, cormorants, kingfishers, and other fish-eating species.
For lakeside communities, mukene is the most accessible fish protein available. It is caught at night using lights to attract the shoals, dried on beaches in the sun, and sold in markets throughout Uganda. Dried mukene has a long shelf life, is easily transported, and provides high concentrations of protein, calcium, and omega-3 fatty acids. Studies have documented its value as a micronutrient supplement for children in areas with limited dietary diversity.
Mukene is also processed into fishmeal for use in animal feed and aquaculture, and there is ongoing competition between artisanal fishers — who rely on mukene for food and income — and the fishmeal industry, which can offer higher prices and process larger volumes. Managing this competition equitably is an ongoing challenge for fisheries regulation around the lake.
The Haplochromine Story: 500 Species, Then 200
No account of Lake Victoria's fish can ignore the haplochromines — the cichlid species flock that once made this lake the subject of intense study in evolutionary biology. These small to medium-sized cichlids, most vividly coloured and each adapted to a specific ecological niche, diversified explosively within the lake over the past 15,000 years following its most recent desiccation event. Prior to the Nile perch explosion, the lake harboured an estimated 500 or more haplochromine species, constituting one of the most rapid adaptive radiations ever documented.
By the early 2000s, that number had declined to roughly 200 species — a loss of at least 300 species, some of which were undoubtedly driven to extinction before being scientifically described. The mechanism was primarily Nile perch predation, compounded by eutrophication that reduced the visibility in which cichlids communicate and mate using colour signals, and overfishing of the haplochromines themselves for use as fishmeal.
The story since the early 2000s has been more nuanced. Some haplochromine populations have partially recovered as Nile perch numbers have declined in certain areas — an outcome that suggests the loss was not necessarily permanent for all species. Ongoing genetic work, including environmental DNA studies, is working to establish which species remain and in what numbers. The result will determine whether Lake Victoria's cichlid radiation can still be considered a living system or an ecological memorial.
Export Trade and Quality Standards
Uganda's Lake Victoria fish export industry is the country's most significant food export sector by value. The primary product is chilled or frozen Nile perch fillet, processed at factories along the lake shore in Jinja, Entebbe, and Masaka districts. Quality control requirements for access to European markets drove a substantial upgrading of processing facilities from the late 1990s onwards, following EU suspension of imports due to food safety concerns.
The EU market access experience shaped Uganda's entire fish quality management infrastructure: HACCP-based processing protocols, trained inspectors at landing sites, hygiene standards for boats and handling facilities, cold chain requirements from landing to export. These improvements benefited not just export volumes but the overall quality of fish reaching domestic markets, though implementation has been uneven across the lake's more than 200 registered landing sites.
Israel, Spain, and Italy have historically been among the leading buyers of processed Nile perch from East Africa, drawn by the fish's firm white flesh, mild flavour, and suitability for a wide range of culinary applications. The European market has been the primary quality driver; regional African markets within East Africa have grown in importance more recently as income levels and urban food preferences have shifted.
